The next morning, I found Alexander in the kitchen, fully dressed, and sipping on an espresso while reading the paper. To say I was surprised was putting it mildly. He was usually gone by this hour.

Either way, Jane was right, I needed to talk to him if we were going to make any of this work.

“Morning,” I muttered as I went to the fancy coffee maker.

“Morning,” he mumbled back, too immersed in his reading.

“I … uh … wanted to talk to you—” I’d been about to broach the subject when my cell phone rang. I pulled it out of my back pocket and noticed I didn’t recognize the number. Without hesitation I answered. “Hello?”

There was a sigh. “Olivia. Finally,” Jack, my ex-husband, answered with a relieved tone.

I internally groaned and regretted answering immediately. I turned around, giving Alexander my back for a semblance of privacy. “What do you want?” I gritted between my teeth in a whisper.

“You haven’t been answering our calls. We’ve been worried,” he said. The average person would assume, oh how thoughtful? But I knew him. Better than even my brother, and he wasn’t being thoughtful. He wanted something.

“What do you want, Jack?” I repeated, knowing full well he was after something.

“Look, your family is having a reunion this weekend and we’ve been trying to contact you to see if you’ll come.”

I rolled my eyes. Right … a family reunion. I wasn’t that stupid.

“Listen Jack,” I whispered into the phone. “I don’t know what you and my brother are up to, but I want no part of it. Count me out of this family reunion.”

“Liv, wait!” he called out. “There’s no ulterior motive, I swear. Your family is just worried—”

“If they’re so worried, why is it you calling me and not them?”

The line went quiet before he said, “They feel like you hate them, Liv. When everything went down, they think you believe they chose sides and it’s just not like that.”

I snorted. “Right. Look, I don’t care what you or they think, I’m not—”

The phone was snatched from my hand by Alexander who was hovering behind me. He put the phone on speaker.

“Hello, this is Alexander, Olivia’s husband. Who do I have the pleasure of speaking with?”

“H-Husband?” Jack croaked out. “She’s married?”

“Yes. May I ask who I’m speaking with?”

I tried to snatch the phone back, but Alexander was much taller than me and held it up high and out of reach with a smirk on his face.

“Um … this is Jack, her … brother-in-law,” he said, and I couldn’t stop the rolling of my eyes. Now he was my brother-in-law? What a loser.

“Right,” Alexander said, not believing him for a second either. “And you’re calling about …?”

“A family reunion,” Jack said quickly. “We haven’t seen Olivia in a few years. She’s missed. You’re more than welcome to join as well.”

Alexander smirked as he looked down at me. He muted the phone. “Well, well, well, a family reunion and you’re trying to hide it from me?” He raised a brow.
